Off the Shelf – #1

Hi everyone!

In my first All the Books post I came clean about the number of books I have on my TBR list. My love for all things new and shiny has resulted in a number of books languishing on my bookshelves for far longer than they should, whilst new purchases are snapped up and read within days (well not always days, but definitely not years!). I have decided (with no rhyme or reason) that any books that I have owned for more than one year will count as off the shelf. I resolved to read one book from my ageing collection every fortnight, and this is my first selection, so…

Welcome to my first Off the Shelf! My first pick is:

What is it all about?

16-year-old Jacob has discovered the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores the abandoned building, he realises that the children were more than just peculiar – they may have been dangerous. And somehow – impossible though it seems – they may still be alive. (Blurb from Goodreads)

Why did you buy it?

Everyone was talking about this book and I just had to have it, but for some reason it got put on the shelf. The cover looks really interesting (this is a theme for me, I buy soooo many books based on their covers!!), and I remember everyone talking about the pictures throughout the book. At that time it was different to the books I was mainly reading and I thought I wanted a change.

How long has the book been on the shelf?

At least 2 years! I have picked this book up since then and considered reading, but it never quite made it through my (somewhat random) selection process.

Why now?

Everywhere I look there are trailers for the film adaptation, the cast keep appearing on chat shows and I keep finding out more and more about what happens. To keep my spoilers to a minimum, it is definitely time to read.

Also, October seems a really good time of year to read this one; the pictures look a bit spooky without being horrendously scary.

Have you read Miss Peregrine’s? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

  1. Awesome! I have a shameful amount of ‘off the shelves’ as well. I started this book yesterday as well, though! (mkay, so I just bought it, so again, a shelved book is crying as soon as I turn my back to it, but still!). I’m enjoying it so far at 10% in 😀

      1. Lol, I’m halfway through chapter 5 now as well and indeed! I was wondering if it would all turn out to be a flashback or something when Jacob finds some old letters. But thank god, it isn’t the case ;). The pictures are awesome!

  2. This is a great idea. There are quite a few books I’ve had on my shelf for far too long. I really enjoyed this one, the photos inside are one of my favorite parts. I’ve actually got the sequel on my shelf and it’s been sitting there unread for too long. Hope you enjoy this one!
